Considered an iBook or PowerBook?  Mac OSX is a tempting option for those wanting Unix, and it has a FreeBSD-ish underpinning.

I believe that you will find more support for more "mainstream" laptops for things like sound and video cards.

You'd probably have better luck asking in -mobile or -questions however
