I can only add, that this is dualhomed proxy firewall, and I experience such lockups during heavy activity (i.e downloading/uploading something from inside to host in DMZ - that is doing Ethetnet<->Ethernet transfers.) ifconfig down/up was doing the job, unfortunately, pinging the host didn't help.
