I've got a bunch of FreeBSD setups running Apache, only two have UPS.
The power supply in many areas of Brisbane (Queensland) ranges from
fair to quite poor, particularly for locations near industrial estates & big
shopping centres. I've seen supply voltage fluctuations in those areas
between 190V & 280V in a matter of minutes (supposed to be 230 -
240), and short term blackouts are quite common in many other as well.
Energex typically blames trees touching the wires, however one has to wonder
since most power here is underground. So far I've only had one FreeBSD
system that got so badly corrupted it needed a reinstall, however before
I ran FreeBSD I had various incarnations of linux, and those disasters were
so sensitive to just about everything from clouds in the sky to the
girlfriend's
"wrong time of the month" that reinstalls were a daily event.

I did read some thread in the -questions mailing list a few months back
where some expert was talking about differences between linux &
unix filesystems. It was mostly over my head, but the issue seemed to be
something about files being written in a symmetric or asymmetric format.
The gist of it was that if a FreeBSD box loses power its supposedly less
likely to get mad than a linux one is. While I don't begin to understand
the finer points of that stuff, it sure seems from my experience that view
is correct..
