I want to switch permanently to FBSD. I cannot do so however unless I learn how to patch my system for security holes. Hence, I am trying to "master" either the pkg_add or ports system. And I have been trying to do so for weeks now and I am so frustrated because it seems I always run into dependency problems (under ports) or some other problem (under pkg_add) when I try to upgrade. I am able to use ports successfully for small packages, but I have been trying to upgrade gnome for 2 weeks. First I did simply "portupgrade gnome". That did not work (dependency problem) so I tried to install the dependencies FIRST. That does not work either. I have different problems each time. And when I write to the list, I guess I am not able to communicate effectively what is the problem because the suggestions I get, if any, don't seem to work. How can I solve this problem? I.e., the problem of simply fixing security holes. I cannot switch unless I can do this and I cannot see how to get past this problem. There is no BSD support group in my city and I have tried to obtain help at the local university but to no avail. What can I do, in general, to fix this?
