Dear Mike Kondrar,

AFAIR, if some of the CDs contains [all of ?] the relevant
packages, you should be able to install it running some menu of
sysinstall; in that case (CD containing the packages), you should
alternatively be able to pkg_add(1) Gnome.

I am not sure about these last statements, though -- I haven't a
PowerPack around.

Well, er, actually, I have tried Gnome, KDE, etc., via the ports
mechanism, wasting an indecent amount of bandwidth :-)

If you have configured a PPP connection to the Internet, and hardened
a little your FreeBSD box (closed unnecessary services and/or
configured a packet filter), then it's as easy as cd'ing to the
relevant port directory (e.g. /usr/ports/x11/gnome), and typing "make
install".

If your CDs contain the relevant tarballs, as is very likely, you can
also use the ports system, after mounting the appropriate CD under
/cdrom -- cf mount(8).

Best regards,
Salvo
