The compiler has already given you a suggestion: recompile with -fPIC. Not the
thing you're working on, but whatever provides /usr/local/lib/libsybdb.a. How
you achieve that may take some jiggery-pokery (CFLAGS=-fPIC before configure,
perhaps).
