I am having a similar problem with my Compaq Armada M700 I have 'device pcm' in the kernel config. After the new kernel (with 'device pcm') is installed, xmms and mpg321 report (visually) that they are working but no audio is heard. Win2k tells me that the card is: "ESS Maestro2E PCI Audio Drive" Location: "PCI bus 0, device 8, function 0" Thanks in advance, -hop hydrogen:~$ sudo pciconf -l chip0@pci0:0:0: class=0x060000 card=0xb1100e11 chip=0x71908086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 pcib1@pci0:1:0: class=0x060400 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71918086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x01 pcic0@pci0:4:0: class=0x060700 card=0xb1130e11 chip=0xac1b104c rev=0x03 hdr=0x02 pcic1@pci0:4:1: class=0x060700 card=0xb1130e11 chip=0xac1b104c rev=0x03 hdr=0x02 isab0@pci0:7:0: class=0x068000 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71108086 rev=0x02 hdr=0x00 atapci0@pci0:7:1: class=0x010180 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71118086 rev=0x01 hdr=0x00 uhci0@pci0:7:2: class=0x0c0300 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71128086 rev=0x01 hdr=0x00 chip1@pci0:7:3: class=0x068000 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71138086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 pcm0@pci0:8:0: class=0x040100 card=0xb1120e11 chip=0x1978125d rev=0x10 hdr=0x00 fxp0@pci0:9:0: class=0x020000 card=0x22038086 chip=0x12298086 rev=0x09 hdr=0x00 none0@pci0:9:1: class=0x070000 card=0x22038086 chip=0x044511c1 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00 none1@pci1:0:0: class=0x030000 card=0xb1110e11 chip=0x4c4d1002 rev=0x64 hdr=0x00 hydrogen:~$ hydrogen:~$ dmesg Copyright (c) 1992-2002 The FreeBSD Project.
