No commercial programmer can safely look GPLed code, because if he does so he may later be sued for creating a "derivative work" if he writes something containing similar algorithms or functionality. Thus, we could only use such software as a "black box;" if there were a bug, we couldn't fix it due to the risk of GPL contamination.
