John,

Sorry for not being specific enough. :)

I downloaded the file:

ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.ORG/pub/FreeBSD/docs/handbook.ps

When I ran it through Acrobat Distiller 2.1, I received the message:
=============================
Distilling: handbook.ps
Source:t:\common\e-reserv\in-eps\handbook.ps
Desitination:t:\common\e-reserv\out-pdf\handbook.pdf
Start Time: Friday, May 24, 1996 at 6:08AM (time set wrong :)
%%[Error: invalidfileaccess; Offending Command: definefont]%%

%%[Warning: Postscript error. No PDF file produced.]%%
Distill Time 0 seconds(00:00:00)
**** End of Job ****

(Did the author work on IBM mainframes using JCL, or what? ;-)

I tried simply removing the ofeending command in a text editor, just to see
what would happen. Processing continued for about 1.5 seconds and then
aborted. I then received an error with define font. There were far too
many define fonts to remove.

I am presently looking at how Acrobat Distiller works in greater detail. I
might be able to figure out a way for it to automagically substitute fonts.
If not... I have begun to convert the Ascii version into a formatted
document (I have to read it anyway... might as well do something useful)
Then I can print the resulting doc to PDF format.

Hope this is helpful.
