Hello Martin,

thank you for trying FreeBSD. The problem you are describing is based
on the fact that the german handbook translation hasn't caught up the
english (reference) handbook. That is why there is a note there saying
that you should check the english handbook first. There are a few
chapters in the german handbook that are more or less in sync with
their english counterparts. For these, the note is removed. For those
chapters where we simply haven't been able to catch up, you should
refer to the english handbook and follow all the instructions there.

The reason for the lack of up-to-date german translations is mostly a
manpower problem. We need more volunteers to translate the most
important handbook chapters into german (and other languages as well),
so that people can read the instructions in their native language. If
anyone is interested in helping out, contact me directly.
