I'm quite confident it wasn't possible until the introduction of regex
parsing in there... don't know for how long it's present, thou.

I don't see how it could break package dependencies.

People hang on it so badly (including me) perhaps because it was (and
still is) considered a good style for so long...

I still have to convince myself that it's bad style.
