I was thinking about this last night and I think I understand why imp changed
it  though I have not read the full logic to really understand to what all
these variables expand to.

The old and suggested version likely removes GENERIC and with that
GENEIC-MMCCAM GENERIC-NOINET or whatever else people have (similar for LINT)
and that might be a side effect trying to be avoided?
