You will want to use the ports. man ports for more details. http://www.freebsd.org/ports/index.html is a nice way to find software from the web. One port you will probally want to look into is portinstall. It simplifies install and upgrading The problem with installing software that way is it can screw up future upgrades and/or installs and/or builds. Because of that, it is generally best to avoid it.
