I'm using the same chipset then (amd/via combo), and 128MB PC2100 CAS2.5 DDR....I'm almost
certain this is something to do with the VIA 686B chip, or it's IDE controller, and an
incompatibility with the ATA driver.

I am also using an IBM hard drive, but it's a much older ATA33 6.5GB deskstar model
(DHEA-36....er...something).

I wish I had a big enough net connection to make downloading and trying a couple of other
versions of freeBSD less than a 45 hour task :-(

Gonna give the old install floppies a go now though, with the 4.1-release install CD and
the 3.5.1-release install floppies. It probably won't work, but hey.

I may also submit an official problem report, as no-one seems to know how to fix this one,
so I suppose it could be down to a bug somewhere.
