On the subject of the psd & usd ascii.gz files, can anyone explain what
causes the apparent corruption in the left margin all these files (the
"little sign" is not so little)?:

   cause  a  makefile  to  fail if you don't do something about
   it), or is simply important, it will be flagged with a  lit-
---tle sign in the left margin, like this:
