Hello.

I have been attempting to install various ports (such as TK-8.3.1) since =
monday and I have been having numerous problems obtaining the files, and =
sorting out dependencies. Therefore, I am seeking advise regarding the =
following issues:

1. Until yesterday, I could not access ftp.freebsd.org at all (although =
I could access the mirror sites). Even now, that site appears to be =
moving along somewhere between 300 and 1200 baud. :)

2. Many of the ports that I am attempting to grab (say KDE 2.0.1) =
require XFree86 3.3.6_7 (according to the web site). When I attempt to =
grab the XFree86.tar file for the /usr/ports/x11 directory (so I can =
just run make) the download times out (see issue #1.) No problem, I =
went after the file on one of the mirrors. Unfortunately it wasn't =
there. Nor were any of the tar files (for the ports make directories) =
there. Such as FreeBSD/branches/-current/ports/x11/XFree86.tar (as =
indicated by the web site.) Is it common for the mirrors to not have =
these files? I did note that they do have the packages, but XFree86 and =
KDE 2.0.1 weren't available in packages... :(

3. To get around issue #2, I downloaded the contents of the =
FreeBSD/branches/-current/ports/x11/XFree86 (and sub-directories). I =
was then able to do a make and make install. Unfortunately, when I =
attempted to install the package I downloaded from the web for TK 8.3.1 =
it complained that XFree86 3.3.6_6 was not installed. The web site =
indicated that version 3.3.6_7 was the dependency. Have I gone batty? =
I eventually gave up on finding 3.3.6_6 ... is the tar file for the =
/usr/ports/x11 directory still out there someone that I haven't been =
smart enough to find?

4. To get around issue #3, I finally broke down and hacked the packages =
db directory and created the sub-directory "XFree86-3.3.6_6" with the =
contents of the XFree86-3.3.6_4 directory. This allowed me to install =
the TK-8.3.1 package! Yeah. However, will this come back to haunt me =
some day? Was that a reeaaaalllllyyyyy bad idea? I wonder ....

If any of you have any advice for me, I would really appreciate it. =
Thanks!
