You should never, absolutely NOT, do things that you don't understand to the files of /etc. It's very easy to make things go wrong by making some change. > I then rebooted, and now i can't log into my machine under root or > any other user. You probably forgot or chose not to update the password database files, after running mergemaster. Try booting your machine in single-user mode and see if you can fix things this way.
