I've had similar experiences. Except not until about two weeks ago.
I can't think of anything I'm doing different.
If I remeber correctly, it always happens, for no apparent reason,
at work while I'm plugged into:

I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 too. Not the 'e' though.

If I turn mine off, and then immediately back on, I still have the
same problem-- even in the boot manager. I have to turn it off and
pull the A/C and the battery and let it sit for a while.
