When I built the world, the definition of __strong_reference() was not found, and therefore instances of usage were interpreted as a function prototype. That indicates to me that the wrong version of cdefs.h was used. More conclusively, 'nm' shows that where there should be symbol definitions in the newly installed libc_r.a due to the __strong_reference() calls, there are none.
