This was traditionally the case. We are trying to get it back to this cadence,
it has just gotten harder with every release. Something something volunteer
project.

Indeed, and to add for everyone else wrt deprecations: no, unless it's an
obvious not-really-upstream-maintained-anymore leaf port. There are many cases
of "old" dependencies with active consumers (and they may very well be trying
to Deal With It in their own ways).
