Is there anything relevant in /var/log/messages?

Are your DNS, /etc/resolv.conf and/or /etc/hosts configured
correctly?  Sometimes sessions can hang if the hostname of the machine
you're connecting from can't be resolved.

Have you tried asking on freebsd-questions?  That's the relevant
mailing list for questions.
