Machine 1 has a Netgear MA401 and is running FreeBSD and is in host-ap mode. Machine 2 has an orinoco gold card and is running Windows XP. The symptom is that if about 30 seconds go by without any traffic going across the link, the XP machine will report that the wireless network has gone away. It will then immediately rediscover it, but in the mean time, any open TCP connections will be dropped. If I run a 'ping -t' in a command prompt, this does not happen.
