You are correct. The simple minded comments and the wi driver aren't
accurate at all, and haven't been for years.
I've personally been using WEP with orinoco cards for over a year. It
works, well as well as you can expect from WEP anyway. I've used it
in both ad-hoc and connecting to a base station.
