Perhaps the 'Description' section shouldn't say much about return values.

It is only used by ccd.c and subr_autoconf.c.  You can start by
unstandardiz^Hsing subr_autoconf.c, which seems to be completely unused
(it's not used by LINT) although only half of it is `#ifdef UNUSED'.
