In what way would it be better without it?  How many programs have you
written that are running in jewelry?  ;^)

The JavaButton allows you to download your own custom code into the Java
Button (or JavaRing), which means you can do arbitrarily complex signatures.
Dallas Semi also sells an iButton minus the Java engine, running their own
proprietary DallOS.  God only knows what the programming is like.
