Hi folks, well, recently I posted a message to freebsd-questions, asking about the best method to backup a whole FreeBSD system to CD media. I got a few answers, most of only gave me some hints instead of truly useful information. The interesting part, however, is that I received quite a few messages at my private eMail address afterwards where people who had obviously read my question asked me if I had done some research about backups and CDs myself in the meantime, and had some recommendations to them. As a result of that, I spent a lot of time last weekend trying all kinds of backup utilities for their usability with ordinary CDs (instead of tapes, for which these programs were originally designed). I then decided to write down my experiences, and probably share it with the rest of the FreeBSD community. Right now, I have extended the chapter of the FreeBSD handbook that deals with backups with a section that focuses on doing backups with CD media. My current work can be found HTML formatted at http://www.tisys.org/misc/backups-cdrbackups.html. Note that this is only my very first draft with (most likely) a lot of typos, (definately) a lot of markup mistakes and probably even omissions or grammatical errors. The basic point, however, is this: before I continue working on my document, I'd like to ask if at all there's a chance that it could actually probably be added to the FreeBSD handbook. I don't know if the information my stuff deals with is of enough importance, but I guess it should at least be published *in some way*, as the messages I have received recently showed that at least some people were seeking such information. If my document is not suited for the handbook, no problem, probably it could be used somewhere else, either by the Documentation Project, or on my own website. I'd appreciate it if some of you could have a look at the document (keep in mind I told you it's far from perfect yet), so that I know if I should continue my work on this, or probably rather work on something else. Greetings Nils PS: Somehow I have the feeling that this message is longer that it should be...
