I just got done figuring this particular scenario out. Once you have sendmail up and running, You can install and use fetchmail to retrieve the mail from your pop3 server. A good "cheat sheet" can be found at http://www.mostgraveconcern.com. Once things are installed, you can either set fetchmail to use either a daemon or a cron job to check for messages.
