Ah, but in the informal poll, it was about 10 to 1 in favor of the change. And no objection was better than "my bikeshed color is better than your bikeshed color." Rod's after the commit was the closest to a technical reason to do something other than I did. Bruce's I didn't understand at all, but seemed more radical that what I wound up doing.
