You've created a directory called fd0 in the / directory, I bet.  The
device has to be /dev/fd0 (or fd0a or fd0c, I forget--I just use
mtools).

Yep, you've made a directory.  Install the mtools port and it'll help.  
You also don't have to worry about forgetting to umount the floppy
afterwards.
