: That said, we are able to get images below 10 MB (depending : on what programs are included). One big savings is : running buildworld with NOSHARED=no. This will build : executables in /bin and /sbin that are dynamically linked. : You cannot do this if you have a separate / and /usr (/usr : is not mounted until later in the boot process). Well, that's not 100% correct. The minimal that will boot a standard /etc/rc is about 6.5M. The other 3.5M is cruft that isn't 100% necessary, but required for the happiness of our bosses or our customers :-) We've also moved much of this process into .mk files that can easily be used to integrate more things. If I ever get time (ha!) I'll try to put this into shape for anybody to use.
