I could not replicate the problem with env NEXINIT="set recdir=/no/such" /usr/bin/vi it did print an error message, but then when I hit enter the error message went away and the screen looked perfectly normal. I deleted the top line, and the line got properly deleted. Are you sure you didn't have a termcap problem? > dismissed, there are 2 identical lines displayed on the screen and no > simple way to redisplay the screen to reflect the actual file content.
