Greetings,
I have been following the list on and off through the
archives and have been trying to find a concrete answer
to a couple of questions, but have really only found bits
and pieces.

I've got an IBM T21 with the 3Com NIC/Modem combo mini-pci
card. The NIC works fine, however the modem is seen in
pciconf -lv output, but I am unable to configure and/or use
it. Now, I am having ot bounce between windows and freebsd
(windows to check things online), so my searches may be a
bit sporadic, but am I wrong in understanding that the NIC/Modem
combo can not made to work with both the NIC and the modem?
The NIC works fine. Is the modem a winmodem? I've tried using
the ltmdm port, but to no avail. The information pciconf puts
out for the card is:

none0@pci0:3:0: class=0x020000 card=0x635610b7 chip=0x605610b7 rev=0x20 hdr=0x00
    vendor = '3COM Corp, Networking Division'
    device = '3C556 10/100 Mini PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter'
    class    = network
    subclass = ethernet
none1@pci0:3:1: class=0x078000 card=0x615910b7 chip=0x100710b7 rev=0x20 hdr=0x00
    vendor = '3COM Corp, Networking Division'
    device   = '3C556 V.90 Mini-PCI Modem'
    class    = simple comms

Has anyone had this combination working? I'm using 4.6-stable,
from about 19 June.

In order to see if I could get another modem to work, I procured
a 'Typhoon Quick Com 56 CL' which claims to use the Lucent
Chipset, but I don't know specifically which one. This modem is a
pccard. When inserted into the machine, first off it is not
recognized in pciconf. The dmesg entry I receive is:

wder# pccard: card inserted, slot 0
Jun 26 00:59:09 chowder pccardd[54]: Card "LT WIN MODEM"("PC card") [] [] has fu
nction ID 2
sio5 at port 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 11 flags 0x40000 slot 0 on pccard0
sio5: type 16450
sio5: unable to activate interrupt in fast mode - using normal mode
Jun 26 00:59:24 chowder pccardd[54]: sio5: GENERIC PCMCIA modem inserted.

So, the kernel is recognizing the the modem at sio5. However, when
I attempt to use it, the system hangs (trying to use tip) or reports
the device as not being configured. I suspect both may have to do
with the kernelconfig, which I am mucking with at the moment, but
given the kernel is recognizing it, should I hope for it to work?
Any thoughts or comments would be helpful.

Thanks
-Jim Spring
