i don't believe this is necessary any more.  wicontrol -p 1 changes to BSS
mode, which was recently made the default setting, where it previously had
been ad-hoc mode.

in any case, i will also give this a try the next time i have access to the
machine.  it's particularly annoying that i won't be able to try any of this
until friday at the earliest ;-(
