Would you describe more about the crash? Did the beep sound stop? Did you see any panic messages? Would you also show us your kernel configuration file? Does it include "options VESA"? Changes after 3.0-RELEASE are all minor and it is difficult to see why your problem is solved by using the latest syscons.c...
