I've had two external usb3-connected disks and write performance got so bad I had to throw them away, for the reasons you're describing. These were SMR disks. It seemed to me that the decreasing performance could be viewed as a failure mode, but with data not being lost. Good for archives I guess but forget it for heavy disk i/o. --home | help
