Subject: oltr0 network is down

I have recompiled the kernel with token ring support, and it now sees my
rapidfire 3140 olicom tr card.

However, when I run tcpdump -i oltr0 it says network is down

I did a ifconfig oltr0 inet 192.168.1.1, and now it works.

But can I not set an IP on it and have it up?

All the machine needs to do on the token ring is monitor the rings packets
via tcpdump/snort, etc.

Can I do "ifconfig oltr0 ether" so that it starts the interface but doesn't
set an IP, or will it need to have an IP.

Derek
