Aha! No, I didn't know about it until now. :-)
Antway, it provided the last, crucial piece of information. I now have
ifconfig_ath0="WPA DHCP" 
in /etc/rc.conf and the wireless net comes alive on boot.

My laptop is wireless! Yay!
