What does this give you: $ ldconfig -r -aout | grep search You should find the directory with the library in the output. For example, I have: search directories: /usr/lib/aout:/usr/lib/compat/aout:/usr/X11R6/lib/aout I suspect that your file is in /usr/X11R6/lib/aout, and that it won't appear in the search directories output.
