Huh, that code is pretty nasty all around -- even with just one lock use
performance under contention is lower than it should be.

That said, your patch pushes it forward even if one could raise some cosmetic
conerners.

Preferably you would mail git format-patch output to me so that i can git am,
otherwise I'm going to write my own commit message and set you as the author.
