Subject:   finally fixed my /etc directory

i *FINALLY* got /etc fixed, it involved installing and old copy of freebsd 4.2 over the existing copy so that it would boot, backing up my stuff, blowing it all away again and installing from cd.  i also found that typing /kernel boots my machine into single user mode, boot -s!!!  what causes that?
