I missed responding to the original but I use cron to ftp. In my case I'm putting the output of 'ifconfig -a' to a ftp server on the internet so that other locations can pick up by dyanamic IP address and hook up with my gateway. If I had to deal with variations in what was sent I would probably do a dynamically generated .netrc. The permissions on .netrc are picky. Read about .netrc in man ftp.
