I have a customer that is connecting to one of our servers via UUCP. The server is running FreeBSD 2.2-stable and is working fine delivering e-mail and news over the UUCP connection. The customer is also able to send e-mail without problems. The problem comes when the customer tries to deliver news posts from his bulletin board to our system. The files are transfered to our system and when our system attempts to run rnews on the file, the permissions are set wrong. The owner and the group on the file are "uucp" and the permissions are set to 600. Since rnews is run as user "news", it can not read the file and exits with an error. I know the files are OK, because I can manually set the permission bits to 644 and run rnews by hand on them and they work fine. I know that I can cob something together to make this work, but I would really like to find out what I have done wrong and fix it the proper way. I have RTFM and neither the UUCP book nor the USENET book describe this aspect in any detail. Has anyone already solved this problem, and if so how?
