What do the logs say ? You should see it come up in authpriv and auth, but
you can turn on all messages if you add to /etc/syslog.conf
*.* <tab><tab> /var/log/all

Do a touch /var/log/all

ps -aux | grep syslog
kill -1 <the PID of syslog>

tail -f /var/log/all

and then try and login and see what error messages are generated.
