Why should we break it? > > You would still do that by 'cd /sys/modules/foo; make; scp foo.ko somebox:' May I suggest that release installation media would provide two copies of modules/ directory for one major release, one with tied modules for performance and another set (not installed by default) with "un-tied" for reference?
