GCC bug you say? Well, explain this then: 

% gcc -prefer-pic t.c
gcc: unrecognized option `-prefer-pic'
gcc: No input files specified

% gcc --version    
gcc (GCC) 3.3.3 [FreeBSD] 20031106

Pay attention to the GCC version number. Still looks like GCC bug for you?
