Sorry, folks, ... situation is under control.
What happened was that somebody repeatedly tried to connect to the host
while it was booting and chewed up all the ptys. They eventually
timed-out, and I can now telnet normally into the system.
The main reason why I posted was because we dont have shell access - users
have '/bin/false' in the passwd file, and I didn't think that someone
trying to telnet in would be able to DOS me in such a manner ...
