Hi again, I guess I should have spent more time troubleshooting. Sound is working now. I spent the last 30 minutes testing it with 6.3-RELEASE and 7.0-RELEASE livecds on two different machines. Ended up tracing my uaudio dysfunctionality to a dodgy USB hub! Onboard HDA was just a matter of setting the right options in the BIOS. All's good on both fronts. Sorry for the false alarm.
