It was uchg, but yes, this was the problem.  

   a bug, unless the system set this flag through a bug, which is
   possible, but I haven't seen this on our own news server with a full
   feed and a 8.6Gb news spool partition.

I haven't got a slighest idea what set the flag, but there have been disk
problems with this machine (a barracuda seems to be locking up the SCSI).
