One was avoiding a cascade of error messages when lock requests were made by a a client with a host name that doesn't resolve in DNS (this is arguably a bug in rpc.statd as well but I'm not touching that). The other was avoiding a panic which appeared to be caused by the userland part of rpc.lockd dying under extreme load.
