It's safe to install FreeBSD first; you should allocate a primary disk
partition (called slice in the FreeBSD install program) spanning
half(?) of the disk and install the FreeBSD boot manager.

When later installing Linux write the lilo into the Linux root partition
and not into the master boot record. You'll then be able to boot both OS
with the FreeBSD boot manager.

You may also install Linux first but also then avoid writing lilo into the
MBR and avoid using extended partitions. I've sometime seen boot problems
when a primary disk slice for FreeBSD is `behind' an extended partition
used by Linux.
